Accessible Historical Data Archive for EMR conversions
One very unique and beneficial alternative enabled by Raven is to use a Coalese Appliance and the Raven Collaboration and Access Tool to provide a consolidated view of historical, orphaned EMR data for physicians and clinics that convert to a new, accredited EMR system. Coalese's Tsunami Integration Engine is used to transform the historical data into HL7 3.0 CDA format and import it into Raven..
This Raven use case is unique in that it avoids conversion of historical patient record information into a new EMR system, while giving physicians the ability to view archived historical records and perform trend analysis, graphing and other advanced analytical techniques, using the advanced Raven visualization tools. Physicians also gain the ability to share designated portions of their historical patient records with the wider primary care team, including homecare nurses, EMT/Paramedics, pharmacists, specialists and other authorized healthcare workers. Raven also enables such historical patient records to be accessed remotely on any modern browser-based device or over cellular networks using smartphone-based mobile devices.
This is a very attractive scenario since it reduces conversion risk and costs, eliminating the need to translate/transform historical patient record data into a new EMR where coding and nomenclature issues can be problematic, yet still meets the needs of the physicians to be able to perform longer-term trend analysis and retain access to historical information, as required by law.
This approach to EMR migration can facilitate the provision of summary patient medical information to PHINs (Provincial Health Information Networks) and repositories (eg. Alberta Event Repository), using Coalese's powerful query, transform/translation and reporting tools coupled with HL7 3.0 CDA data formts. Physician's retain custodianship and ownership of their data in this scenario, thus making it more likely that they would be amenable to such data sharing at the region and provincial levels.
Another key benefit is that access to historical records is available early on in the migration process, which means that physicians and other clinic staff would already be familiar with the Coalese Raven tool. By not having to convert the data the final step into the new EMR system, total migration timelines/costs can be dramatically reduced and the need for physician retraining is reduced.
